Couple Rings history and custom A promise to love

The CoupleSets engagement ring is a cherished piece of tradition and history that goes to several centuries.

Since the beginning of time rings have been an indication of the promise made to someone.

The custom of gifting an engagement ring to a woman goes back to the ancient Egyptians and the time when the ring was presented to show trust and respect and to prove that she was someone who could be counted on and also with whom one could get married and start the family.

The Romans gave two rings to a potential bride. One made of iron for her to wear at home, and one in gold for her to wear out in public. In Roman times, it was fashionable to wear the rings on the left finger, since it was believed that the vena amoris (a direct vein that leads to the heart) was born here.

Over time engagement rings have seen an important change. They are now more like the style we are familiar with today.

In 1477, Archduke Maximilian gave his wife Mary of Burgundy an engagement ring with diamonds on the top. This was the first time we have seen precious stones. This is a custom that has endured through the years and has evolved into an integral part of the wedding ceremony.

De Beers the company that is well-known for its diamond engagement rings, created a campaign in 1974 that established the custom of giving diamonds as gifts. It was a hugely popular campaign immortalized by the timeless slogan "A diamond is forever". He was able to revive the American diamond industry. In 1939, only 10 percent of rings included diamonds. In 1990, the percentage grew to 80 percent.

The most sought-after engagement rings of today are the solitaire ring, Riviera ring that has small diamonds or the tri-ring comprised of three diamonds, and symbolizes "yesterday tomorrow, today, and today together".

There are a variety of precious stones that can be set in an engagement ring. Each stone has its own meaning.

The diamond is a symbol of the power of a relationship. It is an indication of love, virility and passion for life even today. The Ruby is an emblem of passion and intense love. The Sapphire is a symbol of loyalty, and the Emerald is a symbol of optimism. We'll end our list with Aquamarine that symbolizes the hope of an extended and happy marriage. Beryl represents the strength of the bond between lovers, and Opal is a symbol of sincere love.
